| Hornets Fall Twice in Doubleheader |
This week, we saw two great hockey games played out before our eyes, as the Hornets battled through their doubleheader week, hoping to secure their spot alone in second place. Unfortunately for them, their first opponent of the night had other plans. The Yummy Whales, with a win, could move into a tie (at least for the moment) with the Hornets, and that was exactly what they were shooting for.
The Whales got the scoring started just 1:35 into the game, with an unassisted goal by Carlos Sotelo. Just short of nine minutes later, the Whales extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Josh Peirce, off an assist from Taylor Hladik. The Hornets would answer before intermission, however, when Hladik was given a two-minute minor penalty for Hooking. Darin Rinkol and the Hornets would make him pay for his mistake, taking a pass from Kevin Donoghue and slamming it home for a power play goal late in the first period. At the midway point, it was 2-1 in favor of the Whales. Just under two minutes into the second period, Donoghue had the game all tied up with an unassisted goal. Then, teammate Zach Duncan gave the Hornets their first lead of the game with an unassisted goal of his own. The lead wouldn’t last long, however, as Hladik made up for his earlier penalty with a goal, and we were all even at three goals a side. The Whales regained the lead with just under nine minutes to play in the game, when Nicole Kuncl connected with Peirce, and he put the puck home for the go-ahead goal. The Whales would hold the lead for just four minutes, however, as Donoghue received a pass from Saul Renden, and scored to tie the game at 4-4 late in the game. The teams would battle furiously for the next goal, and it would be Peirce and the Whales who would get it. Peirce scored his hat trick goal, unassisted, with 1:40 left to play to give the Whales a 5-4 lead. The goal would also be the game-winner, as the Whales would hold onto the lead through the final minute-and-a-half to win, and move into a tie for second place with the Hornets.
The second game of the night was another good one. The Hornets were on the board just :14 seconds into the game off a goal from Zach Duncan. Then, just over a minute later, Kevin Donoghue added an unassisted goal to give the Hornets a 2-0 jump on the first-place Cobras. Then, the Cobras had their turn at a couple of quick goals, with Logan Richards getting the first and Jacob Atwood the second, both assisted by Austin Klug. These two goals came just :47 seconds apart, and just like that, the game was all tied up. Bailey Klug had an answer for the Hornets, as she buried a shot to regain the lead, 3-2. Atwood and Austin Klug would team up again within a minute of Bailey Klug’s goal to tie the game once again. Darin Rinkol restored the Hornets lead once again with a goal that was assisted by Donoghue. Then, the Cobras turned it on, scoring five goals in the final 7:38 of the period to gain a commanding 8-4 lead at the break. Atwood scored his third, fourth, and fifth goals of the game just 1:17 apart to start the surge. Richards assisted on the first two, while Austin Klug helped on the third of this streak. Then, Austin Klug picked up a goal of his own. Richards added one goal late in the first off an assist from Atwood. With things looking like they had taken a turn for the worse, the Hornets buckled down and fought their way back into this one. Playing some solid defense, the Hornets kept the Cobras off the board for most all of the second period. Meanwhile, Donoghue would score two goals, one of which was assisted by Duncan. Duncan would also get a goal of his own in the mix, and just like that, the Hornets were only down 8-7. The lone Cobra goal (Atwood from Richards) with 1:51 left to play all but did in the Hornets for good, as the Cobras continued their winning ways, 9-7.
Next Sunday, November 22nd will mark the end of the regular season for our Fall hockey league.
